Pop Culture
The term Pop Culture is a weapon of propaganda used as a wedge to divorce culture from the practices of how we treat and engage with one another, replacing it with state controlled and censored media. Pop Culture is the way of making you excited about the limited options allowed to reach mass viewership, rather than dismantle the algorithms, censors, and systems that make portraying the truth of these systems and the freedoms we deserve unsustainable and inaccessible.
Culture is not the mega star’s concert you go to, that everyone’s talking about. Culture is the fact that throwing money to enable abuse, oppression, exploitation, greed, etc will never be far enough across the line that you just pick a different book. Pick a different musician. Pick a different movie.
Culture is not watching the movie about a Palestinian girl’s death that raises money for Israeli production studios and millionaires while the girl’s mother is still under fire in Gaza because it’s “something” or “a step in the right direction”. Culture is prioritizing what makes you feel like you did something over the real material harms you’re enabling by putting money you didn’t have to spend toward such an exploitative project.
Culture is not the list of shows you think do a good job teach kids “the right things”. Culture is the reality that being able to directly raise a child is so inaccessible that more and more stages of development have to be off loaded onto options filtered by the state if parents want to put food on the table.
